Explore and Experience Nature learning the skills & ways        of the

Maine Woodsmen

In the old days, a woodsman or woman would be knowledgeable in all things pertaining to the outdoors and Mother Nature.  These workshops are designed to give you an opportunity to learn about the outdoors in our modern lifestyles.  After attending a workshop you should expect to have learned skills that can be used on your next adventure outdoors!

Map and Compass ~ navigating off trail.  You will learn how to read maps, use a compass and understand how the map and compass work together when in the field.

Safety Precautions ~ ticks, water hemlock, giardia, hypothermia.  Bring your questions to learn simple precautions that will expand your knowledge and respect for insects, weather, plants and animals.

In Your Pack ~ a prepared pack on the trail and waterways will make the trip comfortable and safe in the event things don't go as planned.  A day long or extended outing, you will learn what is necessary versus what is nice to have if you find yourself needing to make unexpected decisions.

A Little Bird told me so ~ learn behaviors that give clues to what is happening in their surroundings.  Understand characteristics in diet, foraging methods and nesting requirements that explain what basic observations are telling us.

Plants ~ jeweled petals, fruits, seeds or humble greens.  Learn to identify flowers, leaf type and arrangement of the plants that grow in the meadows, woodlands and waste places of our natural landscape.

Knowledge of Trees ~ identification and why they are important.  You will learn to use field guides and other resources to look at trees and understand their relationships in the environment.

Animal ~ teeth, tracks and scat.  Learn individual habitat niche adaptations and develop skills to identify a species from the signs you find when out on the trail.

Dragonflies, frogs & salamanders ~ indicators of a healthy habitat, learn the unique needs of these fascinating creatures and the roles they play in the greater ecosystem.

Wandering and Wondering ~ We never know what we will learn as we wander the trails or paddle the pond wondering about nature.  This is a really fun way to explore, that teaches us all something new every time we go out.

Woodsmen's Skills ~ If you are just beginning or would like more advanced skills, we take you out of the classroom and into the woods!  We promote a thorough understanding of the material with hands on practice and building upon each individual’s level of experience. Please inquire, we will design a program for your level of skill and experience!
