"What happened in these here parts of Maine"

Read about Maine, Cabins, Campsites, Hunting, Fishing, Relaxing, Vacationing, Moose, Deer, Bear, Partridge, and everything else in the Maine woods!  If it happens in the north Maine woods, chances are I will be writing something about it at some point!

September 2008

September 15th, 2008
Where has the time gone!  Here it is coming up on fall.  So many things have gone on that I am not sure where to start.
The other night I was out making phone calls and a pack of coyotes started calling to each other.  I was on the phone with Maureen and she wanted to know what all of the racket was.  She could not believe how loud they were.  I wanted to go down the road to see if I could get a look at them but she figured I was crazy to go out in the night with a pack of them around.
I was out on the pond fishing one evening and noticed that there was a loon with a chick!  It was very small for this time of year, so it must have hatched very late.  I am hoping that it can get out before the pond ices over in November.  The adults leave first and then the young from all over will gather on a large body of water and make the trip.  I have seen as many as 50 to 75 rafting out on Chesuncook.  It is quite a site to see for sure.
I had a good time visiting with the guys down in the campsites the past couple of weeks.  Keith, who was supposed to email me some notes of his trip and has not done it yet, Scott, Shawn and Steve come up every year to do some serious fishing.  They were all here the first week and then all but the die hard Keith, went home.  Keith stayed for the second week by himself.  I had to give him a good tip on where to catch fish that were 26 or 27 inches long.  He said that after that the 18 inch fish were just not the same.  I explained to him that I only gave this tip to the "two weekers" and not to divulge the secret to anyone else.  Of course I may have to give the tip to Steve next year if he shows up as he did watch out for my interest, even if it was not in my best interest, while he was here!
(Note that although this just got posted, I did in fact write this early and forgot to put it live!)
