Well, I finally took the time to go out fishing! For the past
two days I have taken the boat out and caught fish on the pond.
The first night I caught a bunch of fish, it was simply a matter of
putting the fly in the water and hauling in a fish. (thanks Larry
for the flies) The largest was 14 or 15 inches and the smallest
was around 10 inches. I took my camera out to take pictures with
but the digital camera was out of film. (actually the battery died
after the first couple of pictures, and they did not come out all that
well) Now day two was another story. The first thing I
caught a nice fish 12 inches long. The wind was blowing pretty
good and the boat was going around and around in circles. I
whipped the line back into the water and straightened the boat out.
I headed back to where the fish were and the next thing I knew I had
something yanking at my line. I set the hook and it really started
pulling. The only problem was, what I had was my outboard motor.
The line had wrapped around the prop and it was twisting the line up in
a big mess. I shut off the motor and proceeded to un-tangle the
line. (make that TRY to un-tangle the line) I finally got it
off the motor, but it was twisted up so bad that I ended up cutting half
of the fly line off. That was the sinking part of the line that
was putting me down to where the fish were. I managed to get
everything rigged back up and headed around my circuit once again.
I only had one other bite and did not manage to hook up. Tomorrow
I will have to put on a new line if I am to get our fishing again this
week. (Who said that fishing was easy and relaxing) I
received a few pictures of our campsites from guests that were up
recently. They show the Pond in one of it's prettiest settings.
I hope that you enjoy them as much as I do.

And here is a picture of the moose that I saw the other day on my
way to town.
As always, click on any of the pictures to enlarge them.
(I knew that you should have left your camera with me Lori !!)

The leaves are finally showing some of the vivid fall colors in places
now. We have yet to have a heavy frost, although we did have just a very
light one a week or so ago. One of these nights it will all change
for sure. Soon the woods up here will be all the best that mother
nature has to offer in the way of painting the tree. The trees are
losing the ability to produce chlorophyll and thus we have the changing
of colors. Today is the first day of fall. Know as the Autumnal or
Fall Equinox, it is the time when there is 12 hours of daylight and 12
hours of darkness. I know that here at Frost Pond we will have 12 hours
and 10 minutes of daylight today. So the date cannot be exact for
all locations. We will have 12 hours and 2 minutes of daylight on
the 25th of September and 11 hours and 58 minutes on the 26th. But
today around 4:30 is around the "official" start of fall. The
fishing has been very good lately. To quote one of our guests,
"The fishing in the river has been spectacular". They had a great
time catching fish in the river earlier this week. Folks fishing
the pond have been doing pretty good as well. The temptation for
me to go out and try my luck is growing each day. Just as I
started to do this entry this morning, a couple of the guys came in and
wanted to rent a boat to go out and try their luck. I got the boat
and motor ready for them and told them where to fish. If they get
some pictures and email them to me I will put them on the journal.
Almost every night my son has to talk about deer hunting with me.
He is getting ready for hunting season as this is the first year that he
can hunt. I purchased him a lifetime hunting and fishing license
when he was 5 years old. Anyone who has a youngster who is
interested in fishing or hunting should look into this option. It
is a great savings for them as their license is good for the rest of
their life, even if they move out of state when they are older.

Who can figure out this weather! First it is cold and it feels
like it is time to put on the "long handled" underwear, then it is in
the 80"s ! All in all, it has been quite nice, but I prefer the
cooler weather. Even though the temps have been in the high 70's
the first part of the week, the breeze kept it very comfortable.
Today is warm, but again the breeze is there to help. Almost
time to try my luck at fishing once again. Just a few more days
and I should be caught up to the point where I can get out for a couple
of hours. The leaves are starting to turn a little more each day.
We still have not had a hard frost yet, but I think by the looks of my
garden that we may have got a little one night. As soon as we get
a good frost, the leaves will probably get a boost in turning color.
I went out for a trip the other day and did see moose. I managed
to also see what a flat tire looked like. I run over a rock and
all of the air just came right out. That is only the second time I
have had a flat in the past couple of years. I plugged the hole
and added some air. I had to stop 3 times to add fresh air.
I really wanted to change the tire at home as I have much better tire
changing equipment here. I made it home and the next day changed
the tire. So now I am back on the road once again. It will
only be a month or so before I put the studded snow tires on anyway.
I try to get them on before the snow arrives. They sure help with
getting around up in these parts. Hard to think about snow when it
is in the high 70's !

Well folks, I am back. Maureen and Jed have returned to the rigors
of school once again. It sure was a strange day here today without
them! I managed to keep myself busy with camp chores and such.
It sure was a beautiful day up here today. There was bright warm
sun and a nice breeze to make it comfortable. The loons were very
happy to have the pond to themselves. (bet you did not know that I can
understand "loon" talk) This has to be one of my favorite times of
year. September and October can have the most comfortable weather
and the air has a smell that stirs the blood in one's body.
Maureen, Jed, and myself went on a day trip on Sunday. We took the
canoe and paddled down the river for about 8 miles. (we put in at Roll
Dam and took out at Lobster Stream) What a remarkable time we had on
this little trip. With Jed in the bow and Dad in the stern, Mom
was along for the ride, well, at least for half the trip. After
lunch, Mom took the bow and Jed was along for the ride. We saw ducks,
cormorants, eagles and moose tracks. (the moose was not standing
in the tracks at the time) It was a very fine way for the family
to spend the last full day together before school. The trout will
be changing into their fall colors this month and they can become
extremely cooperative to a properly presented fly or lure. Some of
the biggest fish of the year will be taken in September. (with any
luck I will be one of the takers, pictures will follow this event, if it
happens) I have a report that the Warden has been seeing a number
of deer lately. He also mentioned that the grouse are starting to
show up. I have not been out of the camp yard much this summer so
I have to rely on others for the reports. I have seen moose on
about every trip out and a fair number of deer. The bulls are
starting to get ready for the rut by removing the velvet from their
antlers. Over the weekend we had a group of folks go hiking in
Baxter State Park. They said that the view from the mountain that
they climbed was wonderful and that they will return. Some of the best
climbing will occur this month. The air does not have the "haze"
that it sometimes has in the summer when the humidity is high. Later in
the month when the leaves reach their full peak color, this part of the
state is magnificent. I have noticed that it sometimes appears
that on a cloudy or lightly raining day the colors are even more vivid
than on the bright sunny days. I know that pictures come out much
better on these days.
