December 06 Dec 24th, 2006 Still not much for snow up in the woods, Santa will have to make adjustments for getting around with the sleigh this season! Dec 8th, 2006 What a strange fall we had this year. Warm temps and no snow until just the other day. I did not manage to get a deer this fall, again! I have been having a dry streak the past few years. Our guests did very well considering the "not so great" weather that we had during hunting season. (Should I be taking lessons from you folks) Jed and I saw a nice buck to shoot at Thanksgiving week. I did not get it because I forgot to factor in the up hill shot, and I am sure that I undershot him. Jed teased me a bit about that, but hey, that's life! I went out every day during muzzle loading season. It was still warm most of the week and not any snow until Friday. By then I was worn out to the point that I did not put too much effort into it. I did jump a nice buck and doe on Saturday, but the wind was just a blowing and I chased them out of their bed. They took me around a small mountain and when I was the furthest from the truck I decided that this was just going to be a hike and not a hunting trip. I was not about to drag a deer through that mess and up over that mountain! After the last day of the muzzle loading season (we only get one week up here) I started working at camp, getting ready for next year. The first thing on the list was getting the dock out. While taking it out, the pond started to freeze over. It would make a sheen, kind of like oil on water, and then you could see little ridges form and small chunks of ice. By the time I got the dock in, I was moving an eight of an inch of ice out of the way. It made that much in about an hours time! This is the first time that I ever spent much time watching ice form on the pond. Usually I see it from a distance and just take note of how fast it is building out from shore. It is one of those things that you should do at least once, but after that it would probably be like watching paint dry. (Actually I have watched paint dry before and it can be interesting if there are some air currents to make patterns when it is happening) The next project was laundry. Now I wish to tell you that getting every washed up at once is a major project. Normally through-out the year, I just have to do a few loads at a time to keep caught up. It is at the end of the season that I do it all up for next spring. So if you think that you have lots of laundry to do at home, take a look at this picture. Yes, the truck is full all the way to the front and that is not even the whole of it! ![]() Last night the temperature dropped down to 5 degrees. (If it had gotten 5 degrees colder we would not have had any temperature at all, cause it would have been 0 degrees) The pond froze completely over and should not open again until May 3rd or 4th. Of course if we get another warm spell all bets are off. Today it snowed most of the day. It is just right for hunting now. Nice and quiet in the woods and you could see the fresh tracks very easily. I went out to make calls yesterday and saw where a couple of deer walked down the road along the lake. They do that to me every year after the season is over. (If the season is open they do it at night which is just as aggravating) Today when I went out I saw where another one walked around. and up and down the road. I think that they just like to torment me with these antics. Next year perhaps we will have a normal fall with snow and everything! The weather forecast is for snow everyday now, until Sunday. I sure hope we do not get too much of it right now! (I would have liked it last week though) Here are a few pictures for you folks to enjoy. GT
